My favorite comedian ever, Mr. Paul F. Tompkins has a stand up special coming out on DVD. I immediately pre-ordered it through Amazon and am excited to own it. Incidentally, I had the good fortune of attending the taping of this show in person. Why, might you ask, am I buying a DVD of a show I already saw? Several reasons:
1. This taping was free. I got to enjoy several hours of comedy without paying a dime. Given the opportunity, I’d like to backpay all involved for the comedy I enjoyed back when this was taped.
2. Similarly, but more importantly, I voraciously consume every piece of free media that Mr. PFT puts out (and there’s a lot of it). Buying this DVD is a small gesture of thanks for the countless hours of free entertainment he provides.
3. Finally, I’m choosing to vote with my money. I want Paul (pardon the familiarity) to continue to make the kind of comedy I enjoy. To help facilitate that, I need to make sure that Comedy Central, AST, Earwolf, et al know that they will all make money by continuing to give him a platform to do what he does. It’s one thing to blog about how great Community is etc…it’s another thing to watch it live on TV when it airs and then go and buy the dvd box sets. If no one in the country bought a ticket to see John Carter, we wouldn’t have to be subjected to future billboards of a shirtless Tim Riggins (clear eyes full hearts can’t lose).
This isn’t meant to be sloppy love letter or anything (although I guess it is) nor is it a self serving pat on my own back…rather, a friendly reminder to turn off youtube, stop pirating, and actually support the things in life you claim to be a fan of.
